BioWare is shutting down after more than 30 years, and the next Mass Effect video game is no longer moving forward.

Electronic Arts (EA) confirmed on Wednesday (October 21) that it is closing the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age as part of a broader restructuring.

The announcement also raises questions about Amazon’s planned Mass Effect television adaptation, which has been in development for Prime Video.

Here’s what has been confirmed about the closure, the canceled game and the TV series.

Why Is BioWare Shutting Down?

EA announced the decision in a statement to employees, explaining that the company is focusing its resources on fewer projects.

The publisher said it had a small team working on the next Mass Effect game, which was still in early development.

EA confirmed that it will no longer pursue the project and is closing BioWare’s Edmonton studio.

BioWare also shared a farewell statement with fans, reflecting on the games and characters it created over the past three decades.

“BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the studio confirmed.

According to Bloomberg, approximately 400 EA employees are being laid off, including around 50 at BioWare.

The closure follows EA’s $55 billion acquisition by an investment group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. The deal closed in August 2026.

EA has not announced plans to transfer development of the canceled Mass Effect project to another studio.

Is the Next Mass Effect Game Canceled?

Yes. The next Mass Effect game that was in development at BioWare has been canceled.

The project was first announced in 2020 and was intended to continue the science-fiction franchise following the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017.

In November 2025, BioWare had reassured fans that the game remained in development.

Now, EA says it has decided not to proceed with the project.

The company has not announced another game in the franchise, although it has not said that the Mass Effect series can never return.

BioWare’s other well-known games include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age.

Is Amazon’s Mass Effect TV Series Canceled?

There has been no announcement that Amazon’s Mass Effect television adaptation has been canceled.

The live-action project was reported to be in development at Amazon MGM Studios in November 2024.

Daniel Casey, whose credits include F9: The Fast Saga, was announced as a writer and executive producer.

The planned television adaptation is a separate project from the now-canceled video game.

However, Amazon has not publicly clarified whether BioWare’s closure will affect the show’s development, and The Verge reported that the company had no immediate update on the adaptation.

The show has not received a publicly confirmed premiere date.

EA also said it is continuing development on other projects, including a new Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man.
