James McAvoy Recalls Nearly Losing His Life After Medical Procedure Went Wrong

James McAvoy is opening up about a frightening medical emergency that left him hospitalized for weeks.

The 47-year-old X-Men actor recalled the experience during an appearance on Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast on Monday (October 12).

James explained that doctors had discovered a shadow on his lung and wanted to perform a biopsy to check for cancer.

The results came back negative, but he said the procedure went wrong.

“That was botched,” James said, adding that he “nearly” lost his life after his lungs collapsed a few days later while he was in bed.

He said he was home alone when the incident happened, calling the experience “crazy.”

James said he ended up spending two or three weeks in the hospital as doctors tried to treat the complications.

The actor also explained how the experience affected his preparation for the 2019 movie Glass, in which he reprised his role from Split.

James wanted to build up his strength for the movie, but he first needed to recover from his hospitalization.

He said a trainer helped him with rehabilitation for the first four weeks because he was not yet able to run, jog or ride a bicycle.

Once he had recovered enough, James was able to begin building muscle for his role as The Beast.

The actor has previously discussed the medical emergency, including in a 2019 interview with Men’s Journal. At the time, he explained that the experience had made him reconsider his work-life balance.

Earlier this year, James revealed that he and his wife Lisa Liberati had privately welcomed a child several years ago.
