The 45-year-old actor says he was previously offered a role in the 2010 drama Blue Valentine, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The actor revealed that he was “absolutely terrified” of the role, but he later went on to work with the director in his latest movie.

“As I was just reminded, it was about 20 years ago that I did kind of one of my first real, I guess, acting roles, and Derek saw it and, and he believed in me, I think way before I ever believed in myself,” Channing said at the TIFF Tribute Awards, speaking of Blue Valentine and Roofman director Derek Cianfrance.

“And that was why I think I couldn’t go on that journey. I just … I was just scared. I was absolutely terrified of that role specifically, and I didn’t go,” Channing continued.

While speaking to CBC News, Channing reflected on passing on the role and praised Ryan‘s performance.

“I definitely … I wish I would have done it. But I think Ryan killed that,” Channing said. “So I don’t spiritually think that one was mine.”
